# Introduction

### What is Longshot?

Longshot is a platform for making predictions across a wide range of topics. Longshot has two main product types: **[Contests](/documentation/contests) and [Markets](/documentation/markets).**

#### Contests

Contests come in two modes:

* **Free-to-play** - make predictions at no cost, with prizes on us
* **Paid** - pay a fixed entry fee for a chance to win the contest's posted prize pool

**How it works:** You make predictions on a set of questions, like which teams will win five NBA games, or whether a politician will say certain words. Instead of buying and selling shares against other traders, you simply compete against everyone else in the contest.

**How you win:** The more accurate your predictions are relative to the field, the bigger your reward. A small entry can turn into a huge payout.

#### Markets

Markets let you predict on a single outcome or stack up to 9 of them into one position.

* **How it works:** Tell us what you think will happen and the size of the position you want to take. Market makers compete to fill it, and you get a live price back in seconds. Accept it or walk away.
* **Combine predictions into one position:** Select multiple predictions and get one price for the whole thing, BTC up, SOL up, and ETH up in the next five minutes, priced as a single position. Every prediction you add multiplies your payout and lowers your odds of hitting.
* **How you win:** Each prediction settles on whether the outcome happened. Get them all right and the position pays out. Miss one and it doesn't.
